KUCHING, Sept 13: A man died and two more were severely injured when a boat engine they were testing exploded in a workshop in Tatau, Bintulu, on Friday (Sept 12).
According to Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis, the incident was believed to have occurred at around 4pm when the workshop owner and three staff members were repairing and testing a boat engine.
“When they were testing the engine, it suddenly exploded, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old worker who was rushed to the Tatau health clinic.
“The other two—aged 28 and 41—were severely injured and brought to Bintulu Hospital, while the 59-year-old owner of the workshop did not sustain any injuries,” he said in a statement.
He added that CCTV footage obtained revealed that the explosion happened abruptly, causing shrapnel to hit all three workers who were nearby.
Police have opened a sudden death report (SDR), and the victim’s body has been sent to Bintulu Hospital for a post-mortem.
Police also advised the public not to speculate on the case.
