BINTULU, Sept 9: The fire at Tanjung Kidurong landfill since yesterday afternoon (Sept 8) has spread over five acres as of 11pm last night.
According to a report by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the fire extinguishing operation continued from two points last night—using a 200ft hose along with a spray nozzle from a water tanker at Point A, and a 200ft hose from a portable pump at Point B.
At 4am, Bomba operation commander Harrison Dawi instructed his personnel to monitor the blaze from both points to ensure that the situation was under control.
They took a break at 6am this morning considering heavy downpour at the location.
Yesterday, the landfill was reported to have caught fire amid scorching hot weather at noon.
Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (Trienekens), the company managing the landfill, had already initiated firefighting efforts on both the surface and base of the landfill before Bomba’s arrival.
By 2.25pm, a seven-member Bomba team was still on site battling the flames.
The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) joined the operation at 3.05pm, sending 11 personnel and a water tanker to bolster the efforts. — DayakDaily
