Wenan Steel set to be major steel producer with RM13.8 bln plant in Samalaju Industrial Park

KUCHING, June 23: Wenan Steel (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Wenan Steel) is set to become a major steel manufacturer in the Southeast Asia region with the setting up of a RM13.8 billion steel plant at Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu.

During a virtual briefing by Wenan Steel’s managing director Gao Wei on the latest development of its project at Samalaju Industrial Park, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development in a press statement said Wenan Steel is currently carrying out site preparation works on 700 aces of land for Phase One of its project.


The ministry said the land preparation is expected to be completed by April 2022 and the construction of the factory will start thereafter.

It gathered that Wenan Steel targets to commence operation by the end of 2024.

Wenan Steel also informed the ministry that its project faced some delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO).

In the meantime, the virtual briefing was attended by International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Liaw Soon Eng, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) general manager Muhamad Yakup Kari and MCC Overseas (M) Sdn Bhd’s general manager Chen Qi. — DayakDaily
