Water everywhere at Sungai Asap, but not a drop to drink

Due to recent incessant rain, the Sungai Asap water intake point is submerged under water.

KUCHING, Dec 20: Water taps in Sungai Asap are going dry again!

This time, it is not caused by low water level at the intake point. On the contrary, it is caused by flooding at the water intake point.

According to Murum state assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, the problem of dry tap is affecting the whole Sungai Asap Resettlement except Uma Baka.

He told DayakDaily that Uma Baka is the only longhouse that has been spared as residents there are using their own system which the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem approved and allocated funds for building.

Approximately 15,000 Sungai Asap residents are affected except for the 2,000 which are residents of Uma Baka.

Chukpai called on the authorities to rectify the water supply system as soon as possible because Christmas is approaching.

“Every Christmas, we are experiencing water shortage at Sungai Asap because everyone is back to celebrate the festive season with their families.

“We hope this Christmas, it will not be a Christmas of water scarcity or dry tap again,” said Chukpai.

Meanwhile, Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Bintulu Office has issued a notice stating that the raw water pump has failed to operate due to flash floods caused by the wet season.

River water overflows and floods the area along the river banks following incessant rain since Sunday in Sungai Asap.

“The whole of Sungai Asap Resettlement Area is affected,” said the statement today.

The statement further pointed out that the department was making arrangements to carry out repair work once the water level subsides.

JBALB Bintulu Office advised all affected to put aside water for their daily use.

It apologised for the inconvenience and promised to resume water supply as soon as possible. — DayakDaily
