Vietnamese Vessel Using Malaysian Flag To Steal From Sarawak Waters

KUCHING: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency detained 30 Vietnamese fisherman together with nine tonnes of catch off coast Tanjung Sirik, Bintulu on May 14.

Sarawak Region Director Maritime First Admiral Ismaili Bujang Pit said the fishermen were detained while unloading their catch on their vessel at 5.30pm.

“Initial investigation shows that they have been active in our waters and they have been covering their movements by flying the Jalur Gemilang on their vessel. Apparently that tactic does not last that long,” Ismaili added.

Those detained aged between 17 to 50 years old and it is also learned that the fisherman also went the extra mile by using local registration identification on their vessels.

The catch was valued at RM72,000 and the seized value including the vessel reaches up to RM25million.
All detained are investigated under Fisheries Act 1985. –
