KAPIT, Oct 25: State DAP claims that SK Nanga Bena is unfit for occupation and urges the government to allocate funds to upgrade the school.
Special assistant to DAP’s Sibu MP Oscar Ling, Paren Nyawi said the school was built in 1965 and was declared open by Tun Jugah Barieng.
“The school was initially run by Kapit District Council before it was handed over to the Education Ministry.
“It was classified as a rural school. However, the school which is only 39km from Kapit town is now already connected by tar-sealed road,” said Paren in a press statement today.
He added that the school is the first school to be adopted under Program Sekolah Angkat 1Malaysia in 2012 and had won the honour of Outstanding School in 2010.
“From our visit to the school, we found out that the school is very rundown and no longer fit to be occupied because it is prone to flood and soil erosion as the school is situated beside Sungai Sut.”
He pointed out that in 2012, the government had promised to upgrade the school by relocating it to a more secure site.
“And during the 2016 state election, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Pelagus candidate Wilson Nyabong Ijang had also promised to upgrade the school if he was given a mandate by the voters.”
Paren said the school is in need of urgent help and urged the government to allocate funds to upgrade the school in the 2018 Budget. – DayakDaily
