Right skills leads to better chances in job hunting

KUCHING: Acquiring the right skills in order to be more employable is vital and SG Akademi (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is offering skill training courses that are designed with the local demands in mind.

SG Akademi centre manager Novert Sullang said the courses available at its first campus in East Malaysia are designed to suit the local demands so that students would have better chances at landing jobs once they graduate.

Encouraging the rural youths to enrol at SG Akademi, Novert who has more than 13 years of experience in eduction line, disclosed that the academy which is part of the SG Group, is accredited by Department of Skills Development under the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia while internationally, it is accredited by the Pearson Education, Gateshead College and TEVT College.

The former lecturer of a private college is passionate in helping youths, especially those from the rural areas, to acquire the right skill trainings to make them more employable. He and his team are very active in conducting roadshows to recruit rural students to enrol at the academy. The academy began operation in July last year and currently operating at Kuching Samarahan Expressway.

“Every one of our lecturers, who are locals, has more than 10 years of experience,” says Novert, whose mission is to recruit rural students particularly those who cannot afford to further their studies at private colleges due to financial constraint.

At the moment SG Akademi is offering culinary and food and beverages training, says Novert, who has a background in hospitality and tourism. Currently students are doing their certification level and SG Akademi is planning to extend the program to Diploma level.

Novert also adds that the academy is planning to offer courses in electrical and wiring, in view of the need for skilled manpower to accommodate the State’s rapid development plan.

“We are also taking the cue from our Chief Minister on the needs in the digital era; that is why we are coming up with short courses in electrical (studies),” discloses Novert, adding that the plan is to have this course available at Sri Aman soon.

Apart from training the students, SG Akademi also assist them is getting quality exposure in the work market during their internship. He also discloses that SG Akademi has signed memorandum of understanding (MOUs) with various star-rated hotels in Kuching City that allow his students to undergo internship with them.

Students will also be equipped with other necessary skills like entrepreneurship, preparing for interviews, writing resumes, as well as communication skills especially in English.

Once they have graduated, the students are ready for the job market, says Novert, whose ultimate concern is the end product- employable skill manpower. – dayakdaily.com
