KUCHING: All eyes were on Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib, wife of Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, when she and her stepson Datuk Seri Sulaiman Mahmud Taib, sang an old Malay number made famous by legendary singer P. Ramlee at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this afternoon.
The occasion was the second day of Hari Raya open house of Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg and his wife Datin Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.
Raghad was accompanying her husband paying a visit to the chief minister and Juma’ani.
About 15 minutes into the visit, Abang Johari came to the stage to announce that Raghad would entertain the guests at the BCCK with a song.
All came to a standstill when she melodiously crooned “Tanya Sama Hati” with Sulaiman, Taib’s youngest son with the late Puan Sri Laila.
“She has a sweet voice,” remarked a senior reporter after she had sung the song.
“She must have learnt to sing P. Ramlee’s songs from her husband who is a great fan of the legendary singer,” he opined.
Abang Johari, speaking to reporters, said he is pleased that Sarawakians of various ethnic groups have come to visit their Malay friends holding open houses.
“This proof that racial harmony is solid among the various communities in the state.
“We pray that this culture will remain in the years to come in the interest of the state and society,” he said.
Meanwhile, thousands of people from all walks of life visited Abang Johari and his wife during their two-day open house.
Among those who visited him yesterday were his three deputies Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Tan Sri Dr James Masing and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and state and federal ministers from Sarawak.
