PUTRAJAYA: The Pujut by-election is set to be on July 4 and nomination day is set to be on June 20.
Election Commission Chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah announced the date after chairing a meeting here today.
Pujut seat fell vacant after the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly decided to disqualify its former Assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon over his citizenship status.
Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar on Tuesday said the decision is within the purview and ambit of the Federal and State Constitution that any proceedings in the assembly shall not be questioned in any court.
Asfia added that the decision is in line with the 1979 judgement of Lim Cho Hock vs Perak Speaker that the matters is for the Legislative Assembly to decide within its exclusive jurisdiction and not for the courts to determine.
The assembly voted 70-10 in favour of the motion by International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh to remove Dr Ting over allegations of his citizenship.
Despite Mohd Asfia defence, Sarawak DAP still plans to challenge the decision in court. – dayakdaily.com
