PM’s announcement: Perhaps not about GE14 after all

KUCHING: Speculations have been rife that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be announcing the dissolution of parliament today.

The speculations arose after the news emerged that he would be making a major announcement at a media conference this afternoon as UMNO president at UMNO headquarters at Menara Dato Onn today at 4.45pm.

All UMNO supreme council members reportedly received the invitation last night to attend the media conference.

All UMNO menteri besar as well as chief ministers are also expected to attend it.

As party officials are keeping mum, speculation and rumours over the substance of Najib’s announcement has spread like wildfire.

Meanwhile, when DayakDaily approached local BN component party leaders for their comments, it was revealed that many were not invited attend today’s media conference.

According to BN tradition, usually when important announcements such as dissolution of parliament are to be made, it is usually done in the presence of all component party presidents.

It is thus suspected that today’s press conference would be most likely about Najib’s trip to the United States and Malaysia’s attempt to increase investment in the United States.

Since Najib announcement of increasing Malaysian investment in the US through the Employees Provident Fund, Malaysia Airlines and Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Malaysians have expressed shock and the announcement did not sit well with many, especially the opposition.

In Sarawak especially, the rumblings from the ground are that the money would have been better spent on improving basic infrastructure and facilities such as the dismal conditions of hundreds of rural schools across the state which are literally falling apart and posing dangers to students and teachers, instead of strengthening the economy of the world’s only superpower and one of the richest economies in the world.

It is thus quite natural for Najib to explain his intention and rational to the nation upon returning from his working visit.
