KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad’s consumers and contractors will have the option of submitting applications online for electricity supply, from next year, its Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili said last night.
“The digitalisation for electricity supply or e-application is the latest technology development that SEB is embarking on and will benefit consumers in future.
“The e-application will enable the consumers to monitor the status of their applications from points of submission to the energisation of supply,” he said at the breaking of fast with the media practitioners at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
He said SEB, early this year, introduced payment kiosks Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and here.
“The kiosks will be installed in other parts of the State in the near future,” Sharbini said.
He said SEB is the first power utility in Malaysia to have a mobile apps.
“Today, our SEB CARES app provides a platform for customers to view their accounts, pay their bills and report breakdowns such as malfunctioning street lighting online.
“The reports will flow direct to our maintenance team via this app for quick intervention,” he said.
He assured that SEB will continue to digitalise its process for greater efficiency and to add value to its consumers as well as to support the State government in its drive to become a digital economy.
Sharbini said SEB, together with the Ministry of Utilities, has been able to provide electricity to 94% of domestic coverage.
“Rural coverage has improved significantly from 55% in 2009 to 87% in 2016,” he said.
Sharbini said SEB is working towards supplying electricity to the remaining 36,000 households in the rural areas through various rural electrification programmes.
He said most remote communities, which are not connected through power grid, will be supplied with electricity through Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (SARES) such as solar system and micro-hydro.
He said this integrated initiative aims to provide 24-hour electricity supply through advancements in alternative energy technology to remote communities where it is very difficult and will take significant amount of time to connect to the main electricity grid.
Sharbini said SEB consumers are no longer just in Sarawak, but are also in West Kalimantan.
“We are currently talking to Sabah and Brunei on Power Exchange agreements, providing a platform for us to materialise the Borneo Grid,” he said. – dayakdaily.com
