Masing sees red over logging trucks on rural tar-sealed roads

A logging truck travels on the newly tar-sealed Jalan Sungai Antaroh, Kapit.

KUCHING, Nov 3: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing is furious that logging trucks are roaring over country roads not meant for them as soon as these roads are tar-sealed.

Producing two pictures taken on Oct 28 as evidence, he said this was blatant disregard of the law.

“This logging truck is seen at Jalan Sungai Antaroh, Kapit, in spite of the state Works Department’s (JKR) prohibition on them to use the road.

“It (road) has just being tarred and we instantly see these logging trucks on the road,” said Masing who is also Infrastructure Development and Transportation Minister.

He urged relevant authorities including the Forestry Department, police and Land Transport Department (JPJ) to take swift action against these overloaded logging trucks.

“This is blatant disregard of the law. The Forestry Department, the police and JPJ must also take immediate action.”

“If we don’t stop this now, the road will be damaged in no time. I don’t take this disregard of the laws lightly,” said Masing.

He said the big overloaded trucks also pose dangers to ordinary road users who are using much smaller vehicles.

“Not only these logging trucks don’t follow the law, they create dangers to ordinary road users. Timber companies are not above the law,” said Masing. — DayakDaily
