KUCHING, Nov 14: Tanjung Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu is appealing for urgent upgrading and repair works to be carried out on dilapidated schools in her area, especially SMK Sematan and SMK Lundu.

Other schools she drew attention to were SK Telok Melano, SK Pueh, SK Pugu, SK Rambungan, SK Stunggang Melayu, SK Stunggang Temelan and SK Sebat.

Citing the example of SMK Sematan, she said the school’s perimeter fencing has collapsed.

“This has raised the issue of students’ safety specially the boarders as there were already cases of outsiders intruding into the school compound.

“I was informed that these intrusions were caused by plantation workers from the plantation situated behind the school.

“We hope the issue will get serious attention from the ministry,” she said, appealing for urgent action before any untoward incidents happen.

Concerning SMK Lundu, she said the school needed a new school building to cater for the need of 70 students with special needs.

“At the moment, there are only three classes which are meant for 21 students,” she said.

She also pointed out that the school needed a new library and new wiring system.

She said not only did the buildings and classrooms of the above-mentioned schools needed to be upgraded, teachers’ quarters of these schools were also in such terrible conditions and rebuilding was much needed.

“I have high hopes that the Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry will give this matter high priority,” said Jamilah while debating on State Budget 2018 at the State Legislative Assembly here today. — DayakDaily
