Federal govt should look to establish LCCTs outside KL, opines AirAsia chief

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes

KUCHING, Nov 25: There is a need to build a low cost carrier terminal (LCCT), not just in Sarawak, but everywhere else, says AirAsia group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

“We need low cost terminals and cheaper facilities to develop tourism. But this is out of everyone’s hands because (setting up an) airport is a federal government issue.

“Every chief minister wants more tourists and better airports in their state. But this is all controlled by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and my argument has always been that the latter is only interested in Kuala Lumpur. This needs to be broken up,” Tony asserted.

He hoped that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Jonari Tun Openg will continue to speak to the federal government and Ministry of Transport on this issue.

If the plans goes through, an LCCT in Sarawak is expected to boost tourism, health, services and handicrafts sectors, thereby providing economic returns to the state and its people.

Tony made these remarks after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at the latter’s office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here earlier today. — DayakDaily
