KUCHING: Civil societies Dayak National Institute (DANI) and Dayak Dudong Association (PDD) will organise a talk on native customary rights (NCR) land at Tuai Rumah Berendam Seliang longhouse in Durin Kiba, Sibu on July 8.
This talk is a follow up to a successful forum on NCR land issues in March in Miri which was well attended by the Dayak landowners.
“This time DANI will give more attention to the people in the rural areas because they lack authentic information regarding NCR issues,” Dayak Dudong Association (PDD) president Julius Enchana said in a press statement.
He said PDD has been actively conducted community activities in rural areas, especially on NCR land issues.
“In addition, we have also held dialogue programmes such as Randau Pendidikan and Randau Pemansang Menua. And we have found out that community response was very encouraging, ” he said.
“This time at Tuai Rumah Berendam longhouse, we have chosen NCR Land Randau as the main topic and this topic is well suited to the current situation, as we all know NCR issues are endless and no finishing line.
“These issues have also received various reactions from various parties,” he said, referring to the state government’s decision to definite Pemakai Menua (Ancestral boundary) and Pulau Galau (Community Forest Reserve) in the coming November state assembly.
“We hope this can be a reality and we fully support the wishes of a coalition of nine Dayak NGOs on pemakai menua and pulau galau.
“The Dayak community should be given the opportunity to view and evaluate the daft Bill of the Sarawak Land Code relating to Pemakai Menua and Pulau Galau before it is tabled,” he said.
Julius said PDD feels it is its responsibility to bring itself closer to the community and to address the issues related to NCR to them.
“We do not want any more conflicts to arise due to NCR Land issues. Enough, we have lost the late Bill Kayong, which we consider to be “Bujang Berani” in defending the NCR issue, “he said.
Cobbold John, an oil palm entrepreneur and a NCR land activist, will talk on about the hardships faced by people facing NCR issues at the coming talk on NCR land. He will also share strategies to develop NCR land.
Apart from Cobbold, former Land and Survey officer Mathew Jeluing is also one of the facilitators, and he will touch and explain the sections of the Land Code section in more detail.
Nikodemus Singgai, DANI’s surveyor, will explain the importance of community mapping to defend the rights of NCR communities
In the upcoming dialogue, DANI and PDD take more emphasis on question and answer session because they feel it is more practical.
The programme is expected to be attended by various levels of society who have expressed their interest in listening to NCR issues.
According to William Mangor , DANI principal, said: “We (DANI) have been successful in the NCR awareness programme throughout Sarawak since April and we now carry out NCR awareness programmes to rural areas and to longhouses to empower rural communities.”
