DAP to move motion to stop rock blasting at two quarries

KUCHING, Nov 5: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen will move a motion in the upcoming State Legislative Assembly to stop all blasting of rocks at the 7th Mile quarry and Batu Stigang quarry.

He submitted the motion on Oct 30 and gave notice under Standing Order 23 when he stated his case.

He said it is a requirement set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment that the safety zone of a housing estate from a quarry is 600 metres.

However, the 7th Mile quarry next to Kuching 7th Mile Bazaar is situated less than 250 metres from the housing estate of Mei Lee Garden, at Jalan Stakan.

The Batu Stigang quarry at Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa, Samarahan is situated less than 350 metres from the housing estate of Lorong Bukit Stigang.

He said the regular blasting carried out by the quarries may undermine the foundation and structure of houses in the vicinity and constitute a threat to the safety of the residents.

“I will move the motion to ask the state government to issue orders to stop all blasting of rocks at the two quarries,” he said at a press conference at DAP headquarters here today.

The Sarawak Legislative Assembly will be held from Nov 8 to 17 at the State Legislative Assembly Complex here. — DayakDaily
