KUCHING, Mar 2: The Betong district has witnessed a surge of Covid-19 cases while Sibu remains the district with the most number of coronavirus cases reported.

According to a press statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Betong registered 49 Covid-19 new cases overnight, in comparison with only four cases reported yesterday. All these cases emerged from Jalan Muhibbah Cluster.

The spike in Covid-19 cases in Betong district did not come as a surprise as Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had already revealed yesterday that cockfighting activity at a longhouse in the Bukit Saban constituency has been the source of the Covid-19 infections in the district.

In the meantime, Sibu reported 52 cases of Covid-19. Out of the 52 cases, 40 cases were identified from active contact tracing to positive cases.

Seven individuals were detected when screening at health facilities, three cases were detected following screening of symptomatic individuals and two cases involved medical staff in Sibu.

Apart from the considerably high positive cases in Sibu, Marudi which has been a green zone of Covid-19 was found to have one positive case.

Statewide, SDMC reported 159 Covid-19 cases today.

Sibu reported the most with 52 cases, followed by Betong (49), Kuching (18), Bintulu (15), Miri (9), Sarikei (5), Dalat (3), Samarahan (3), Sri Aman (1), Bukit Mabong (1), Marudi (1), Tatau (1) and Subis (1).

This additional 159 cases has raised the total confirmed Covid-19 cases in Sarawak to 9,924 cases.

There were 227 Covid-19 patients who had recovered and were allowed to be discharged from the hospitals while a total of 2,315 patients are still being treated for coronavirus at eight hospitals and low-risk quarantine centres across Sarawak.

There were 163 new cases of Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) reported and four PUI cases were awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test. — DayakDaily
