KOTA SAMARAHAN: Wheelchair bound, Bilong Rintong could only be grateful for the assistance he received.
With less than two weeks to go before celebrating Gawai Dayak with his family, the 74 year-old received some basic assistance in terms of sugar, milk, coffee, dry food, carbonated drinks and cash.
“This may not seem much for those who can afford it, but for someone like myself, this is something to cheer about,” said Bilong when met by dayakdaily.com.
Bilong is among 90 unfortunates within the Dayak community in Kota Samarahan Parliamentary who received basic assistance under the “Program Pautan Kasih” in conjunction with Kota Samarahan Gawai Dayak Celebration 2017 at Kampung Sebayor here on Sunday.
Bilong also said he also applied for assistance from Community Welfare Department but have yet to receive any replies from them.
“With my condition, I could only rely on my children. But they too have their own families to think about. All I could do is to wait for the department to respond to my application,” Bilong added.
Meanwhile, Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang said the assistance is an ongoing program, which is also another way to be close to the constituents.
“Only by having close engagement with them, we know who are in need of these basic assistance,” said Rubiah. – dayakdaily.com
