KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing said Bakun needs a public jetty due to risk of security breach at the dam.

“Currently, the only access to the lake is through Bakun security road, which is unwise in the long run,” said Masing.

Locals in Bakun, uses thejetty to land their catch from the lake and fish buyers would come twice a week to this restricted area, which also doubles as a make shift fish market.

“The lake needs another access and we are proposing a new 12km road to ease this problem,” said Masing.

The proposed road will be build on a former logging road and it is estimated to cost the government RM60 million to build.

“If we look at the bigger picture, it is good that Bakun now attracts visitors from around the state for its fresh fish from the lake. And it is time we improve the infrastructure there so it can spur further growth to the area,” said Masing.

Earlier today, Masing received courtesy call from representatives of Sarawak Energy, Bintulu Works Department and Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation who briefed him on the matter. –
